With over 440,000 jobs needing to be filled in the construction industry this year (US Department of Labor, 2019), ABC is at the forefront of creating workforce development initiatives. They are building the workforce through the merit shop philosophy: that projects and personal advancement should be awarded based on performance, skills and achievement.
“Connecting people to amazing careers is important for our industry,” said ABC Rocky Mountain Chapter President & CEO Doug Carlson. “ABC helps our members develop people for the betterment of our communities.” ABC Rocky Mountain Chapter (ABCRMC) is committed to developing this future workforce and has launched new tools informing job seekers about the benefits of going into careers in construction and directing them to a job board so they can directly apply for careers with ABC Members. BuildYourFutureRockyMountain.com is a resource for high school students, transitioning military veterans and any job seekers to learn more about the benefits of pursuing a career in construction and to easily apply. The website gives an overview of the different entry-level trade opportunities for applicants, lays out how much they can make in said trades, promotes opportunities for career advancement within the industry and more! One page of the site targets high school students by outlining the benefits of going into construction careers instead of the traditional post-secondary educational route due to the mass amounts of loans students incur. Another page targets military veterans who can build on their military service by receiving credentials for their military training which makes them more marketable to employers. The website is also linked to Rocky Mountain Construction Careers Job Board, which can be found at Careers.abcrmc.org. The site is powered by ZipRecruiter, rated #1 by employers in the US. Jobs posted on Rocky Mountain Construction Careers are posted to over 100 job boards across the country to help employers hire amazing talent to build amazing companies. These resources were made possible by ABCRMC’s staff and regional workforce development committees throughout the state. To thanks members for their time and dedication to these initiatives, ABC members receive two complimentary posts. Contact the chapter for more information. Visit us at www.abcrmc.org Denver, CO – The Associated Builders and Contractors Rocky Mountain Chapter (ABCRMC) hosted over 270 members of the construction industry from all over Colorado at the Embassy Suites Denver Downtown Convention Center on Thursday, April 18th. This networking breakfast and program featured ABC’s Chief Economist and President and CEO of the Sage Policy Group, Anirban Basu, and attendees included members of ABCRMC along with industry guests. The program also recognized member accomplishments such as Lockton Companies and Wipfli’s 40th member anniversaries, 11 members who won awards at ABC’s National Convention last month and the CSU Student Chapter which won first place overall at ABC’s National Construction Management competition. Anirban Basu presented on his predictions for Colorado’s economy in 2019 and its impact on the construction industry. “The Rocky Mountain area will continue to be one of the fastest growth areas in the United State with Denver, one of the largest metro areas, seeing 1.8% growth,” said Basu. He continued to discuss job markets in different regions throughout the state, real estate costs, foreign investments, tax cuts, and more. Although his predictions were overall very positive for the state of Colorado, he warned that the economy is fragile and that an eventual economic collapse is always a possibility. The event was sponsored by the following ABC Member Companies:
Denver, CO – Twenty-one teams of undergraduate students from colleges and universities nationwide put their construction project leadership skills to the test during Associated Builders and Contractors’ annual Construction Management Competition at ABC Convention 2019 in Long Beach, California, on March 24-28. The four-person teams, which were assigned to complete the same construction management project over two days, received awards in five categories at the Careers in Construction Awards ceremony at the convention’s conclusion. They were judged on project management, safety, quality control, estimating and presentation skills.
ABC Rocky Mountain Chapter’s competition team, comprised of members of the ABC Student Chapter at Colorado State University (CSU), won first place overall in the competition. The CSU competition team members are Jack Jambor (Team Captain), Sean Furst, Chris Martin, Wade Sousa and Zac Frazier (alternate). They were accompanied by Faculty Advisor Jon Elliott as well as outgoing ABC Member Liaison Mike Menke and incoming Liaison Ty Eberhardt, both with FCI Constructors, Inc. The team placed as follows:
“It is exciting and inspiring to experience the level of passion that is exhibited by all of the CMC teams,” says Mike Menke, ABC Member Liaison. “These students fully dedicate themselves to sharpening and developing their tools for the future all while carrying out the Merit Shop philosophy. Congratulations Jack, Zac, Sean, Wade, and Chris, [and our competition team redshirts] Justin, Wyatt, Jeff, and Ashley on your win in the most real-world construction management competition in the nation! Be proud of all of your hard work and thank you to everyone in the RMC for your support. The industry's future is bright.” This annual competition, designed to challenge knowledge, organization, time management and presentation skills, gives the nation’s top construction management students a glimpse into the real world of construction. All participants are active members of the ABC National Student Chapter Network, which connects local ABC chapters to colleges and universities with construction management programs to work toward the ultimate goal of building the talent pipeline and mentoring future leaders of the construction industry. For the competition, the team worked to put their bid together up until the competition in Long Beach. They had to be prepared to adjust their work based on project changes given to them. On day one of the competition, all the teams were given a change order, had to update their project proposals, and were given a 50-question written exam. Based on those updates, the finalists were chosen. The second day the finalist teams presented their projects. The project for this year’s competition focused on the District Edgewood High School Event Center and Sports Complex, a new 14,202-square-foot, single-story event center building in West Covina, California. The project’s site improvements included the demolition of an existing 25x25 meter pool, decks and buildings, and the installation of a competition pool and aquatics facilities. As the construction industry continues to grow in Colorado Springs, so does the need for a skilled work force, which is why ABC is supporting our members on local efforts to educate students and the public on the incredible opportunities available to them in the trades. More than 50 students from Atlas Prep, Mitchell High School and Calhan High School attended the event where they rotated through 6 different stations and participated in a variety of hands-on activities and influential discussions with industry professionals.
